The Josephine Mill and its Owners – James Walton

The Josephine Mill, a historical watermill in Newlands, Cape Town, was built by Jacob Letterstedt around 1840 and named after Crown Princess Josephine of Sweden. It was originally powered by a network of waterways from the Newlands spring and was later expanded to include a steam mill. Over the years, it was owned by various individuals and businesses, including Letterstedt, Anders Ohlsson & Co., Ohlsson’s Cape Breweries, Mrs. Kate van der Byl, and Miss Myra East, according to South African History Online and Artefacts.co.za. Miss Myra East donated the mill to the Historical Society of Cape Town in 1975, which then restored it and it is now a museum.
