In 1851 he departed Scotland to begin the 90 day voyage to Durban. He partook in the three hunting trips in Zululand between 1852 and 1856. Exploring the Transvaal in 1857 and venturing to Lake Ngami in 1858, becoming the second white man to see the famed Victoria Falls. On this trip he met up with acclaimed naturalist and explorer, Dr Livingstone. This book is a compilation of his journals, whereby he describes in vivid detail, his discomforts, his brushes with death as a result of the wild beasts and the hostile environment.
